Worth Waiting For

Kaitlin wanted a razor scooter. All the kids on the block have one. While not one to give into the whole, "well everyone has one so I need one too" theory I understood her desire for one as she was riding the one that she got when she was four.

So onto the Target website we went...we looked at all the colors and the different options and compared prices etc. She finally picked out a red one (hey...the girl has taste, although personally I thought the purple sparkly one was fabulouso!) We ordered it.

For a week straight I heard DAILY if not HOURLY the chorus of..."WHY isnt it here yet?" "Do you think it will be there when we get home?" " Did they get the wrong address?" "Do you think they sent it to the TARGET store?" "What is taking so long??"and on and on it went until I was ready to cry so desperate was i that the damn scooter arrive!!!

Finally finally finally It arrived and the joy in my child's face was directly proportional to the amount of time she had to wait for it. She was beyond estatic that it had arrived. And even at the age of nine...tucked it right next to her bed that night.

I wonder, in today's society of immediate feedback and automatic responses, have we actually short changed ourselves because there are very few things for which we have to wait? Sometimes the anticipation is actually better than the event. Like good food, good sex, and good conversation I suppose, somethings things are worth waiting for and actually increase the pleasure.

Great observations. Unfortunately we live in an age where "I want it yesterday" robs us of life long virtues like patience, fiscal discipline and self control. How many of us are up to our eyeballs in debt cause we just want it now?
