I just read the most interesting book. It's called The Handmaid's Tale Margaret Atwood.
It is a commentary on feminism and American Culture The synopsis from Spark Notes says..."For every utopia, there's a corresponding dystopia. This tale of a bleak future depicts a time where women are valued only for their reproductive capacities. While the novel is horrifying, there are moments of poetic warmth and humor. It is a brilliant satire."
The story is fictional...about the future in America. After there has been nuclear war, a Moralistic society has taken over. Infertility is rampant and the human race faces dying out. So they institute rules to ensure the future of the human race. Those who have viable ovaries must have as many children as possible but even carrying a child to term is difficult.
Its intersting...sort of a sci-fi meets Children of Men thing. I enjoy reading this type of book...the "what could be" type of story.
When I picked it up at the bookstore I didnt realize that it was an older book...meaning that it was written in the '80's. I enjoyed knowing that because it helped me put it into the context of that culture. I try and read a classic novel each summer....I wonder if this counts?

Atwood is such a great wordsmith. You should check out The Blind Assassin.
Yes. It is a classic in the world of Sci Fi dorkdom. [Speaking as a member of said world.]
