Revelations from the McDonald's drive through

It takes very little Ive come to realize.
It takes very little to make people feel better or to bring slight joy to their lives. Its often the simple things that matter. For example. Two days ago I asked our administrative assistant if she could order purple board markers...sort of an indulgent stupid little request. Yesterday she popped in and gave me three of them. Made my day.

I was thinking about this this morning when I was in the drive thru lane of McDonalds (which no doubt does not contribute to the Patti-Shivers-butt-renovation plan) (another story for another day...) I know the drive thru workers at the McDonalds by our house...not by name, but having gone there for years you get familiar with people. We exhange polite conversation and occassionally it veers into the more personal.

Many of the women you can tell are from a lower income background. It is SUCH a pleasure to see them light up when a simple compliment is handed out. Something as simple as eye contact and a "Your hair is really cool" (lots of cool braids and beads and fancy types of designs) matters. It actually matters. The dividends are great but the cost is low.

Most days im in a hurry. Most days I havent got time for small talk...but seeing the beauty on the faces of people when they remember that they are worthy is amazing. Im wondering why I dont do this more. I need to.

Wow, today Patti, a senior girl who was doing a copy job, turned to me and said, Mrs. Langdon, I want to tell you how much I appreciate all you do. I am copying these papers and realized how little of a job this is and how much more you do for us here at the school, thank you, That made my day. You are right, we don't take time to realize how we can MAKE A PERSONS DAY OR RUIN A PERSONS DAY ALL IN ONE FELL SWOOP.
