Prom is here!
We have been working on this since Thanksgiving. Its been there niggling in the back of my head for months.
Now we are one day away. Im exhausted of it. Its been lots of fun but definately some pressure and time consuming.
There are a MILLION and one little details to think about. I know the best way is to be prepared for anything and everything and to work ahead but still it all comes down to the day or two before. Friday LeAnne and I will go to decorate Interlachen. Im excited to do that... I think the best part has been being able to make it pretty and fun without having to pay for it (out of my own pocket) The kids have made all the decisions and we have just implemented it.
The theme is sort of Old Hollywood Silver Screen....by title the kids are calling it "Here's Lookin' at You Kid". Not that they even get the Casablanca reference at all.
What has been neat is how the students have decided to use prom as a means to raise funds for Kristina and to help bring her home. They have been so pro-fund raising all year for this cause its been so encouraging. The juniors and seniors have decided to each give up something for prom and instead of having that "whatever" they would give the money they would have spent on that "whatever" to the Kristina Fund. I know the Juniors and Seniors thought they had it in the bag because really it was their thing. They challenged the Freshies and Sophies to match their funds. So far the Freshies and Sophies have raised almost 1000 dollars...yes...there ARE three zeros there. Just money that they have given.
The one that touched me the most was Rachel. It was her 16th birthday last week and her mom kept asking her what she wanted to do for it. She decided rather than have a party she would take that money and any money that she recieved for gifts or from relatives to Kristina's fund. A huge decision for a 16 year old! When I asked her what was her motivation she said, "I just thought that there is really nothing i need or want right now and this would be much better....like something that was really worthy and made a difference." She contributed 600 dollars! (she gave me permission to write this story)
This reminded me of Steph who raised over 500 dollar earlier this year.
It reminds me that what we do is worthwhile...that somtimes some of the characteristics of Christ that we talk about actually get in.
