When did Calcutta become Kolkata?
Ive been reading in recent days and came across this new spelling a couple of times. I was puzzled and decided to find out more!
Here's what I found:
Calcutta changed its name to Kolkata in December of 2000. (WHERE In the world have I been...thats okay, only SEVEN years behind the times) The city leaders changed the name in an effort to show their independance from former British rule. Additionally Kolkata more closely reflects the Bengali pronunciation of the city's name.
So...now you know!!

Oh my friend! Thank you for the shout out to my hometown! I am suprised that you did not hear about the name change back in 2000, as it caused quite a stir! Many merchants rioted in the streets. In my opinion, their rage was perfectly understandable...I mean what the H-E-double hockey sticks were they supposed to do with the hundreds of thousands of 'My Grandma went to Calcutta and all I got was this stinkin' T-shirt' or the millions of 'Calcutta is for Lovers' bumperstickers!!!
Love,
Pumnani
