I was talking with a colleague this afternoon over lunch and we were discussing how problematic family holidays can be...just the dynamics and dysfunction that creeps up. We came to the conclusion that basically, We ALL got "stuff" in our lives. And by "stuff" I mean baggage, bad coping mechanisms, idols, hurtful patterns of relating and on and on I could go.
I asked the question, " So then, is anyone emotionally healthy?" I mean, I know we are not perfect, but even people who have had great parenting and wonderful homes still have "Stuff" because of sin in the world.
I loved his answer: " I think that the healthiest we can be this side of heaven is to realize that we have "stuff" in our lives. You know, acknowledging it is a huge part of the issue. And then each day pushing against it (the bad/hurtful/harmful/damaging ways of coping and relating). a little bit more. And then getting up again the next day to wage battle against it again with Christ's help."
Some people are so wise.
