Well, not really, but I AM doing better at working out. Over Spring Break I think I walked one day. The structure of the work week is much better for me. (no suprises there)
Its amazing to me that I can actually run somewhat!! Its not fast or pretty but it is movement and it does move me forward. I can almost do a half mile without stopping....I know its not much but I seriously could not even walk that without being winded a couple of months ago so I know that there has been progress.
I hate it though...really, I am not kidding.
I cannot think about doing it, I just have to get dressed and go because I could easily talk myself out of it with in seconds. The whole time I am walking or running I am thinking about when I can quit. I mentally give myself goals like, "Okay Im running up to the bridge and not stopping before" or "Im walking to the next tree and then running again." I always feel like a lumbering gorilla too...Im so NOT the lithe gazelle-like runners that I see occassionally.
On Monday a guy sprinted past me...he was all decked out in the running gear and such...older guy but very fit and you could tell he was a runner. And here's me in my collered shirt, fully lipsticked , running with my phone in one hand. Of course there was the "nod of acknowledgement" as he zipped past me. Eventually, about 15 minutes later I was making my way back...struggling...seriously saying to myself "Okay...about 10 more houses....okay now 9..." and this guy zipped by me again. Over his shoulder he yelled, "YOURE DOING GREAT! DONT STOP!!" That was just the encouragement I needed!
I will say that I DO appreciate the good sweat and the endorphins, along with the daily absolution of guilt (that I have for NOT working out...the guilt) I love the throbbing that you can feel when you stop and your heart is beating and you can feel the blood coursing through your veins...yeah, that I like.
I toyed with the idea of just not doing the race..its hard...Im not going to be able to do the whole thing running, but I cant quit...thats not going to help me make this change in my life.
I wonder though...will I ever grow to like excercise? I mean really at 40 Im still in the same place I was as a 5th grader...chubby and dreading sweating.
Well...at least now I have good hair and killer lipstick.

Patti-
I'm SOOOO proud of you for doing this!! I think it's awesome!!
BTW- how in the world are you running and talking on the phone at the same time....girl- put that gorgeous blonde hair up (you can still wear lipstick) in a cute ponytail and leave that phone at home!! you will go much faster if you're not pre-occupied.... damn girl :p you RAWK!!!
Keep at it Patti! You're taking charge of an area of your life that will pay you back in HUGE benefits. I do the same thing when I try to add running to my walk... "okay... just to the 5th driveway... okay, now just to the huge oak tree." It feels so much more manageable. I hate running too, and at this point in life, I need to invest in some depends if I ever want to do it seriously... :)
He's right... you're doing great. DON'T STOP.
I'm a former non-runner that has been able to finish 2 Chicago Marathons, and I swear on my Grandmother's grave on that. If you still don't believe me ask Sheri VT. and she'll back me up that I'm not lying to you and she's the reason I found your site!
First of all, you don't have to run the whole time to consider yourself a runner--adapt a run/walk time idea. Pick a race to train for and then go to www.halhigdon.com to look into a running schedule. From there try and pick times. For example, we started off our first marathon by doing run 5 minutes walk 2 minutes for the Hal schedule. You can go up or down on those times as you want considering that was an 18 week schedule. I think we did 5 and 2 for 3 weeks and then 6 and 3 for a week, then 6 & 2 for 3 weeks, 7 & 3, 7 & 2, etc. But I tell you the run/walk is awesome because it saves your body. And try to find a buddy to run with. It's a lot harder to blow off a run if you know you have someone waiting on you then you going out alone.
Reward yourself with a goal after a long run. There is nothing wrong with Dairy Queen's vanilla ice cream dipped in chocolate after a 6 mile run in a week that you've reached all of your running goals!
Just my ideas, but hey I'm an over 6 hour marathon run/walker and very proud of it.
Keep running! Keep moving. If you want try one minute running, one minute walking and build up. It doesn't matter just keep doing it!
