The Concert at Amway Arena on Valentine's day was incredible! WOW!
The "new" Van Halen consists of "Diamond" Dave (David Lee Roth) singing lead, Alex Van Halen on drums, Eddie Van Halen on Lead and Wolfgang Van Halen (Eddie's son with Valerie Bertanelli--yes think Barbara Cooper from One Day at a Time) on Bass.
Sasa and Taylor met us there and after dumping two extra tickets, getting some refreshments, we found our seats. They are so fun to be with! I swear Sasa and I could talk for hours even if we didnt have anything to say.
The opening act SUCKED to say the least. At least in my opinion. It was Ky-Mani Marley, yes the son of Bob Marley. ICK...reggae is NOT my thing at all. After the third song I leaned over to E and said, "He needs to be done". Finally after a painful half hour he WAS done. Plus come on...why is a REGGAE act opening for one of the best rock bands of the 80's. I mean really.
Well the show did not disappoint!! They opened with "You Really Got Me" and dang, I must say that Diamond Dave is a showboat. (To find out the funniest comment of the evening about David Lee Roth email me because it is not appropraite to write on this G-rated blog, but I will say...Sally is hilarious!) I actually love his hair short as opposed to the rocker-do of the 80's. Of course he is 50 soooo. Hes totally hot for 50 though, I that is undisputable!
Of course Eddie Van Halen was IN-FREAKING-CREDIBLE. Im not a music person and certainly not an exper but he was truly amazing. We were commenting on how his son Wolfgang plays bass and gets to tour with his Dad, who is one of the most amazing guitarists in the world and gets to do this at age 16. Its like every boys dream come true. Did you know that Eddie and Alex Van Halen were classically trained musicians from the Netherlands? (GO DUTCH!) In addition to their classical training, Eddie played the drums and Alex played the guitar. They flipped when they realized each of them was better at the other's instrument. (Little Van Halen trivia for you there...)
Tay brought binoculars and so we passed them back and forth all night watching Eddie jam and David Lee Roth strutt his stuff. It always amuses me at how real performers are. Ive spoke about this before regarding live theater and its true of ANY real entertainment...its so much richer than television or movies. It was so interesting to me to see them drink a Gatorade or take a drag on a cigarette or pull each other's cords out of the way. It makes them so human.
They ended with their biggest commercial hit, JUMP, which got everyone all wound up...great way to end the night!
