I was putting away groceries the other day and noticed this horrible smell emanating from the pantry. Like any good Dutchie, I realized this substantiated cleaning out the pantry. So I did that and noticed i had GROSS mouse droppings in the pantry. After throwing away anything opened or even resembling being opened, anti baterial wiping the entire pantry down and spraying it with bleach, I bought some mouse traps.
THAT took two phone calls to E, a visit to Holly and finally my neighbor down the street showed me how to set it. (DURrrrrrrrrrr!!--I had never set oneand for the life of me could not figure it out...I was like IM A FRIGGING COLLEGEGRADUATE!!!! I SHOULD BE ABLE TO FIGURE THIS OUT!!)
So, I set three traps in the pantry (nothing like overkill) and two in the garage.Four days later...still horrible smell, no mouse.
Day five, Im pulling the refridgerator out, getting the step ladder out to check the plant shelf...NOTHING, but the bad smell persists. I go between keeping the pantry door open so that its not overwhelming when you open it...and shutting itso that the surrounding area doesnt smell.
Day six, I send Eric up into the attic to see if he can see down into the wall up there because SOMETHING has obviously DIED and gone to hell in our wall. He cant see cause of the slope of the roof. I wanted to send him on the roof just to check that there was no dead possum there too but he gave me a dirty look so I threw that idea out.
As he's coming down from the ladder he says to me, "Hey, you know when Mom and Jamie lived in that house in Carrollton, a squirrel died in their wall and Michael (his younger brother) had to sleep in the living room for a month."
Im staring at him like, "Are you kidding me???
The internet says the smell will subside between 3 -4 weeks.... If we live that long. Can people die from a bad smell??

Ha!
We live in an oak grove and our neighbor used to let her yard go, so we had the occasional RAT in the attic. Last year I noticed a horrible smell in the hallway just above Marla's door. I smelled it for days before Don did, and then he finally crawled up into the attic to find it. Sure enough, dead rat. Once after that we couldn't find the awful thing and had to wait about 3 weeks. We slept in a different part of the house and kept the windows open as much as possible. (Since all of our drama, Don has found and repaired the offending hole under the eves of the house where the things were getting in.) Hang in there.
We had half a dead snake in our bedroom wall. We had been hearing a critter jumping around in the attic for a week or two having a ball at night. When I went up to the attic to check, the critter (possum?) was gone, but 1/2 a snake skeleton was right over our bed. The critter must have been playing and eating it.
At some point it decided to put the other half of the snake in a 'safe' place which turned out to be a 5 foot drop to the middle of our bedroom wall. The smell was awful. I finally put my nose to the wall to find the point of origin, cut a big hole in the dry wall and removed what was left of the snake and sprayed lysol around like crazy. I put the square cut out back on the wall and we hung a picture over the spot. It got repaired when we renovated the house.
